History
The Times Educational Supplement (TES) was first published in 1910 as a pull-out supplement in The Times newspaper. Such was its popularity that in 1914, the supplement became an independent weekly publication selling for 1 penny.1
TES covered higher education until the Times Higher Education Supplement was launched as a sister publication in 1971. By 1999, a separate group of News International - Times Supplements Limited - was restructured to create TSL Education Ltd, at this stage also publishing the Times Higher Education Supplement, and Nursery World. In October 2005, the group was sold to Exponent, a private equity group,1 who in turn sold it to Charterhouse in May 2007. November 2006 saw a re-launch of the newspaper's appearance and content, both offline and online, as it became a full-colour publication in its print version.
Today
The Editor is Gerard Kelly and the deputy editor is Alan Thomson. Alternative versions of the publication are produced for Wales and Scotland, named TES Cymru and TESS (edited by Neil Munro) respectively.
The newspaper continues to be published weekly on Fridays, at a cover price of £1.50. It has continued to combine its print publication with its online presence, TES Connect, particularly in connection with its employment vacancies. Circulation figures for the first half of As of 2008[update] show an average net circulation per issue of 57,714, with 98.2% of these being sold in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.2 Data from the National Readership Survey suggests that average monthly readership is around 397,000, of which around 90% are in the ABC1 category.3
The TES Connect website is now split into distinct sections, including 'Community', 'Jobs' and 'Resources'. Community contains staffroom forums. Jobs is home to all the vacancies listed in the TES paper and is updated daily. The Resource section is the place for teachers to share their uploaded classroom resources, free of charge, like lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, IWB resources, worksheeets and activities. An electronic archive of TES news articles relating to education and published since 1994 is also available.
The TES has published a succession of colour magazines supporting the newspaper - starting with Primary which was later spun off to become a free standing title under the editorship of Diane Hofkins, then Teacher and Friday and now The TES Colour Magazine.
TES HireWire, a free online recruitment service for education, supports all roles from leadership and teaching to support staff – permanent or temporary.
TES also provides leadership recruitment, called TES Prime, an expert recruitment search and selection division helping schools fill leadership roles.
